Hume City endure frustrating loss to Preston

Hume City FC’s strong run of league form has come to an end after a frustrating 1-0 loss to Preston Lions at NASIOL Stadium on Friday night.

With a season-high crowd attending the local derby, Hume City were unable to break down the stubborn Preston defence despite being the much better team during the fiery 90-minute contest.

Hume City FC started off brightly from the opening whistle, creating a number of small chances and applying consistent pressure that resulted in plenty of corners within the first 10 minutes.

While nothing came of the early pressure, it seemed like only a matter of time before Hume City would get the breakthrough. Having controlled most of the possession for the opening stint of the game, it was the away side who got on the scoresheet first thanks to a Jason Romero strike from just inside the box.

The goal against the run of play instilled a newfound confidence for the visitors as momentum swung their way for the rest of the half – Hume City’s best chance coming from an Aisen Ishak header that went just wide of the goal following a brilliant Birkan Kirdar free kick.

Preston nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half following a defensive miscue by goalkeeper Michael Weir, who just managed to recover and clear the ball off the line, sparking a brief moment of chaos in the box.

Hume City continued to press for an equaliser – Godfrey Debele came close in the 65th minute, latching onto a low cross but directing his shot narrowly wide. He remained a persistent threat throughout the half, with multiple attempts on goal, though none truly troubled the Preston goalkeeper in Lucas Trenkovski.

Late in the game, Josh Okane whipped a dangerous searching ball into the area, just missing Josh Bingham at full stretch. Then came perhaps the closest chance of the half, as Joseph Forde unleashed a shot that sailed agonisingly wide of the upright.

Despite the relentless push in the final minutes, Hume City FC couldn’t find the breakthrough and were ultimately left to rue missed opportunities in a game they largely controlled.
