League leaders Avondale outplay Hume City FC in 2-nil loss

The NPL’s benchmark team Avondale FC has overrun Hume City in the eighth game of the 2025 season at Avenger Park in Parkville, Victoria.

Avondale scored a goal in each half to secure the win, and largely looked the better team for the majority of the match.

Hume City offered plenty of resistance, unwilling to give away too many goals in what was always going to be a tough fixture.

The men in red can hold their head high, but the well drilled Avondale squad always looked ahead of the game.

The opening goal of the match came thanks to a spot kick after Hume City defender Mark Ochieng had an accidental handball in the box during the 10th minute.

Hume certainly had some chances late in the first half when Lloyd Isgrove was pulled down inside the box during injury time. The referees did not see any foul.

Hume started the second half with plenty more gusto, but their chances were squandered by Avondale’s highly organised and effective defence.

The second Avondale goal came in the 56th minute when the pressure in Hume’s half was simply too much.

The result sees Hume remain in sixth place on the league ladder.
