Hume City FC endured a forgettable night at the Home of the Matildas on Friday, suffering a 5-1 defeat to Heidelberg United FC.
In its first visit to the ground since last year’s penalty shootout triumph in the Elimination Final, Hume City entered the game full of confidence, aiming to replicate its past success and capitalize on the momentum of two straight wins.
The team couldn’t have asked for a better start, as a thunderous strike from Josh Okane outside the box, following a corner, found the back of the net—giving us the advantage just six minutes in.
The fast start saw Hume City dominate possession for the opening 20 minutes as they searched for a second goal—only for Heidelberg to win a penalty against the run of play.
An uncharacteristic error from Michael Weier saw the goalkeeper collide with Bul Juach as a cross was whipped in, gifting the opposition a penalty, which Juach converted.
Momentum instantly swung in favor of the home side for the rest of the half; however, Hume City managed to hold on until the break.
Unfortunately, our robust defense couldn’t hold for long in the second half, as a lucky ricochet in Heidelberg’s favor fell into the path of Asahi Yokohama, who set up Juach in the box.
Yokohama then got onto the scoresheet himself just after the hour mark before scoring his second six minutes from full-time. The Japanese striker completed his hat-trick in extra time to make it 5-1.
Adding to the frustration of the evening were the early substitutions of Godfrey Debele and Aaron Reardon, both forced off due to injury.
Hume City returns to action at NASIOL Stadium on Friday, 21 March, at 8:30 PM AEDT.
