Hume City’s unbeaten four-game league run has come to an end at the hands of Heidelberg United after the league leaders claimed a 1-0 victory at Nasiol Stadium on Friday night.
In what was a challenging start to Nick Hegarty’s first game in charge as new Head Coach, the visitors scored within the first minute of the game after the Hume City defence failed to clear the ball following a fast-charging attack.
Although Hume City seemed shellshocked in response to the goal, allowing Heidelberg to press on and control the game, the home side eventually worked themselves back into the game and started to produce a number of half-chances through Rob Harker – the Englishman’s best chance coming late in the half.
Despite Hume City showing plenty of promise, it was Heidelberg who looked more likely to double their advantage with two huge opportunities coming in the first half – one going just wide of the post and the other being saved by the returning Michael Weier.
Hume City ended up finishing the half looking the better side as our push for the equaliser continued to build up – a run of three consecutive corners saw us come close to scoring.
After the half-time break, the attacking prowess of both teams remained in motion as each had solid chances to find the back of the net, Michael Weier was once again called into action to make a huge save just before the hour mark, saving a one-on-one.
Hume City created a number of half-chances but were never able to truly test the Heidelberg goalkeeper as the time eventually ran out and we were handed our first league loss in more than a month.
All attention now turns to Hume City’s next league fixture – an away visit to Lakeside Stadium with South Melbourne on Friday 27 June at 7:30pm AEST.
