Hume City FC have secured its fourth consecutive NPL Victoria League win after claiming a hard-fought 3–2 victory over St Albans Dinamo FC at Nasiol Stadium on Saturday night.
Goals to Godfrey Debele, Birkan Kirdar and Lloyd Isgrove helped Hume City FC take out the victory that sees them move into the top five ahead of the upcoming northern derby with Preston Lions.
Hume City FC got the better start of the two teams as the home side applied a heap of pressure right from kick-off — that dominance paying off just eight minutes in when Debele kicked his first league goal for the club after meeting a brilliant cross from Lloyd Isgrove.
Kirdar came close to doubling the lead shortly after when he was fouled just outside the box — the corresponding free kick parried away by St Albans Dinamo FC goalkeeper Jacson Riley on the line.
Although the home side looked most likely to score again, just 10 minutes after the goal was scored, Dinamo produced a cross out of nowhere as Aisen Ishak tripped up opposition striker Mikel Platt — forcing the referee to point to the spot.
Former Hume City player Joseph Gulevski stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty — sending goalkeeper Michael Weier the wrong way.
The game picked up the pace following Gulevski’s penalty, but it was Hume City who again came the more likely of the two teams to score — Josh Okane coming close with an effort that hit the side netting before Isgrove’s shot was saved.
Following the main break, Hume City’s relentless pressure continued with Debele getting one-on-one with the St Albans goalkeeper just seconds into the half, however St Albans took the lead 10 minutes later through Lucas Byrns, who finished off a deadly counter-attack from the away side.
Hume City didn’t have to wait too much longer to get an equaliser, as Birkan Kirdar was brought down inside the box just five minutes after the goal — the vice-captain took the penalty himself and fired past Riley into the bottom left corner.
Incredibly, a third penalty was given a few minutes later and it went Hume City’s way after Debele was brought down in the box having run onto a beautiful through ball from skipper Josh Bingham.
With Kirdar on the bench, Isgrove stepped up and coolly converted the penalty in the same direction that the vice-captain did — giving Hume City a much-deserved lead.
Hume City held on for the rest of the match to secure its fourth league win in a row, setting up a mouth-watering tie with Preston Lions on Friday 16 May at Nasiol Stadium.
