Hume City Go Back-to-Back with Commanding Win Over Altona

An electrifying performance from Joel Russell has helped Hume City FC secure consecutive wins for the first time this season after defeating Altona Magic 2-0 at Nasiol Stadium on Friday night.

The youngster proved too hot to handle for the Magic defence throughout the match as he scored the opening goal in the first half before earning a well-deserved penalty shortly into the second, which was coolly converted by Birkan Kirdar.

With some notable absentees, including captain Josh Bingham and Lloyd Isgrove, missing from the starting eleven, Russell stepped up to lead the Hume City attack and did so brilliantly with assistance from both Kirdar and Godfrey Debele.

Right from the get-go, the trio constantly applied pressure on the visitors’ defence, with Debele causing plenty of headaches from the right wing, including the first shot of the game.

In what was a fast-flowing opening 20 minutes, both Russell and Debele had good opportunities to open the scoring – however, it was Altona who had the best chance with an impressive header hitting the crossbar.

Each team had good moments in the next stint of the half; however, it was Hume City who were rewarded for their hard work with the ever-important opener thanks to some moments of magic from Russell and Kirdar.

With just 10 minutes remaining in the half, Kirdar found himself with the ball on the halfway line and played a sublime through ball to Russell, who made a brilliant run into the box behind the defender, only to have his shot saved by Altona shot-stopper Christian Rossi.

A brilliant ball from Kirdar from the resulting corner saw Rossi’s attempts to punch the ball land only as far as stand-in skipper Harry Ashcroft, whose headed effort across the box was met by a thundering volley from Russell into the back of the net.

Kirdar and Russell combined again to produce the second goal of the evening as the latter made a searching run to get on the end of a through ball from Kirdar – beating the offside trap and taking the ball into the box before being fouled and winning the penalty.

Following some heated moments between the two teams, Kirdar stepped up to the penalty spot and coolly slotted it into the bottom left corner, sending Rossi the wrong way.

During the game’s remaining 30 minutes, Hume City battled hard to add a third to their total, with Debele having three big opportunities, Mehmet Uysal coming agonisingly close 10 minutes from time with a charging header over the crossbar, and Obi Eze producing a stellar run from the halfway line to go just wide with his attempt in the 90th minute.

The hard-fought 2-0 victory saw Hume City FC solidify their place in the top four, now just five points off league leaders Avondale FC.
