Hume City FC has endured a 2-1 loss to South Melbourne on Friday night after what was a frustrating National Premier League Victoria affair at Lakeside Stadium.
In what was a case of being unable to convert big chances, Hume City showed plenty of fight throughout the night as a Birkan Kirdar penalty kept us in the game.
South Melbourne got off to the better start and controlled the play for the opening 25 minutes of the first half before Hume eventually started to work their way into the game.
Huge chances from Rob Harker and Oli Kelaart, the latter of which required South Melbourne’s goalkeeper to produce a spectacular double save from point-blank range, almost put Hume City on the scoresheet, but it was the home side who went into the break on top after a goal eight minutes from their new signing, Ren Nagamatsu.
The second half proved even more frustrating as South Melbourne shut down any major Hume City FC attacks and put a stranglehold over play.
Hume City continued to press and show determination for that equaliser, and their efforts were rewarded just 10 minutes from time after Kirdar was brought down in the box.
The midfielder stepped up to the plate and produced a wonderful effort to fire past Diaz as the ball crashed into the top of the net.
Unfortunately, celebrations were short-lived as South Melbourne responded almost instantly.
Despite efforts to push for another equaliser in the final few minutes of the encounter, Hume City couldn’t find it as the game finished 2-1.
Hume City returns home for another big clash against Avondale FC at Nasiol Stadium on Friday 4 July.
