Hume City FC has suffered a blow in its pursuit of National Premier League Finals after falling to Oakleigh Cannons 4-0 on Friday night.
Despite showing plenty of promise in the opening stint of the game and coming close to opening the scoring on two occasions, Oakleigh proved too strong throughout the 90 minutes, scoring two goals in both the first and second half.
The game had a quick start with both Hume City and Oakleigh having good attempts in the first five minutes – Hume City’s shots coming through Godfrey Debele and Joseph Forde.
While there were positive signs to come from Hume City, it was Oakleigh who scored first with a header from Connor Hampson just 10 minutes into the game, before Adem Duratovic doubled the advantage in similar fashion after heading in a dangerous cross.
Michael Weier came to the rescue just before half-time with a strong save, before Lloyd Isgrove came extremely close to getting one back for Hume City after beating the Oakleigh goalkeeper and tapping the ball towards the line, only for desperate defending from the home side to keep the ball out off the line.
Hume City had a bright start to the second half with Harry Ascroft getting on the end of a Birkan Kirdar corner, but like the first half, Oakleigh scored against the run of play – their goal coming through Ajak Deu who volleyed into the back of the net off a corner just after the hour mark.
From then on, Oakleigh contained the game and didn’t allow Hume City to build momentum – the game eventually put beyond reach just 14 minutes later when Harry Arnison added a fourth, scoring from the rebound when Weier made an initial save.
Despite the loss, Hume City still remains a solid chance to make the finals, with four games remaining in the season – the next fixture being a home match against Port Melbourne on 25 July at 8:30pm.
