Hume City draw with Knights

Hume City FC has been held to a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Knights away at Tompsett Stadium on Friday night.

With the home side fighting to stay in the National Premier League, they presented a serious challenge for Hume City, defending gallantly for much of the game.

Keeping Hume City scoreless at halftime, it took until the 79th minute for Lloyd Isgrove to put Hume City in front – a lead that only stood for 180 seconds as Knights equalised with a lucky goal just seven minutes from time.

The late goal set up a tense end to the game as Hume City were unable to break past the home side and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Hume City came out of the blocks strongly and dominated the early phases of play, nearly taking the lead in the fifth minute when Harry Ascroft struck the post following a well-placed free kick from Zahi Addis. The chances kept coming, with Godfrey Debele and Rob Harker both threatening the Knights’ goal inside the first 15 minutes, as Hume’s forward pressure unsettled the home side’s defence.

Despite Melbourne Knights gradually growing into the contest, Hume continued to find openings. Addis produced a moment of individual brilliance midway through the half, twisting past defenders and forcing another save before a flurry of chances for both sides followed, including a close scare at Hume’s end when Mason Tatufu blocked a shot and Ascroft cleared off the line after a penalty shout.

The second half began much like the first, with Hume on the front foot. Early efforts from Rob Harker and Mark Ochieng’s dangerous ball into the box created more goal-scoring opportunities. Josh Bingham came closest just past the hour mark with a diving header brilliantly saved by the Knights goalkeeper.

Goalkeeper Damon Camilleri was called into action several times, making crucial saves in the 57th and 69th minutes to keep the scores level. But persistence paid off in the 79th minute when Lloyd Isgrove finally broke the deadlock, finishing off a superb attacking move that highlighted Hume’s quality in the final third.

However, celebrations were short-lived as Knights hit back just three minutes later with a scrappy equaliser. Debele had a golden chance to extend Hume’s lead moments before the goal, denied first by an outstanding save in a one-on-one and then by a desperate goal-line clearance from a defender.

As the game entered stoppage time, Hume pushed for a winner, with Debele again testing the Knights ‘keeper, but the hosts held firm. Despite dominating large periods of the match and producing several quality chances, Hume City had to settle for a frustrating 1-1 draw at Tompsett Stadium.

Despite the result, Hume City were handed a lifeline in their pursuit of Finals as rivals Dandenong City drew 1-1 with Port Melbourne – keeping Hume in the box seat for sixth place with two rounds to go.
