Hume City FC have made an important step in its pursuit of finals football in 2025 with a commanding 4-1 victory over Port Melbourne on Friday night.
With a brace to Rob Harker and goals to Lloyd Isgrove and Godfrey Debele, the win gave Hume City valuable points to stay in sixth place, while also giving new manager Nick Hegarty his first taste of victory since returning to the club.
Despite a strong start from Hume City FC which saw some half chances created from skipper Josh Bingham and Harry Ascroft, Port Melbourne scored against the run of play 20 minutes into the game following a mistake by Damon Camilleri.
Fortunately, the Hume City faithful didn’t have to wait long for a response as some strong build-up play ended up in the path of Harker at the edge of the box, with the Englishman taking an impressive first touch before coolly putting it past the Port Melbourne goalkeeper.
Hume City almost added another just minutes after Harker’s goal as Debele came extremely close, but it wasn’t until a beautifully taken corner from Birkan Kridar deep in the first half ended up in a scramble on the line, with Isgrove smashing the ball into the back of the net and putting Hume City up 2-1.
The second half continued much like the end of the first, as Hume City came out firing and in search of another goal with solid control of the play.
Hume City was eventually successful in that hunt for a third, as Debele got on the scoresheet just before the hour mark after getting on the receiving end of a brilliant centred ball from Harker, with the striker easily slotting the ball into the Port Melbourne goal.
Less than 10 minutes later, Debele went from receiver to provider, giving Harker an inch-perfect ball that allowed the Englishman through on goal before he cheekily flicked the ball over the goalkeeper – scoring his second of the night and seventh of the season.
Harker had the chance to claim a hat-trick shortly after, 15 minutes from time, but he skied the ball over the crossbar before Mehmet Uysal’s brilliant goal beyond the 18-yard line using the outside of his boot was ruled out after the referee claimed a foul in the lead-up.
Despite not scoring that final goal, Hume City still came away with a confidence-building victory that sets the team up nicely for the remaining three games of the season.
