Favourite son to return to Hume City FC as Head Coach

Hume City FC is delighted to officially confirm the appointment of Nick Hegarty as Head Coach for the 2025 season and beyond.

A longtime stalwart for Hume City FC, Hegarty has a wealth of experience as a player and manager both for the club and at an international level.

Born and bred in the United Kingdom, Hegarty began his professional career with notable League Two outfit Grimsby Town and had small stints at Scottish team St Mirren and non-league team Mansfield Town before making a move to Australia, where he joined Hume City FC in 2012.

The move began a long-term successful relationship between player and club that saw Hegarty win the prestigious Football Federation Victoria Gold Medal on two occasions – an award given to the best player of the National Premier League season – assume the role of club captain and become one of the club’s all-time highest goalscorers with 52 goals.

Following his successful six-year career as a player, Hegarty was appointed as Hume City FC Head Coach in 2017 and started out as a player-coach. In 2018, he retired from playing to focus purely on coaching, where he was able to guide the team to a famous Dockerty Cup title in 2019, which was the club’s first major piece of silverware, while also being named as Coach of the Year.

In 2022, Hegarty resigned from his position as Manager to return to the United Kingdom with his family in a move that saw him join Huddersfield Town’s Senior Women’s team as Assistant Manager before heading to Grimsby Town to become the club’s Youth Development Phase Lead, doing so until confirming his major return to Hume City FC.

Hegarty will formally commence his role on Tuesday 17 June and will take charge of his first official game in Hume City FC’s home fixture against Heidelberg United FC at Nasiol Stadium on Friday 20 June.

Halil Hussein will remain as Interim Coach for this weekend’s NPL fixture against Altona Magic, having coached the team to its NPL victory against Dandenong City and its Dockerty Cup tie with Nunawading City.
