Hume City signs Englishman Max Wright for remainder of 2026 season

Hume City FC is delighted to announce the mid-season signing of highly accomplished attacker Max Wright.

The Englishman arrives in Broadmeadows having had a strong career in England that has seen him play in English Football League 2 and the National League, with Wright joining Hume City FC from FC Halifax Town.

Born in Grimsby, Wright spent his whole youth career playing for the highly renowned Grimsby Town FC and signed with the senior squad at 17-years-old in 2015.

Loan spells to Sutton Coldfield Town, Scarborough Athletic and Boston United then followed for the rising star, with Wright’s sole season at Scarborough Athletic proving his most prolific as he found the back of the net 15 times.

Following successful stints with those three clubs, Wright was recalled to Grimsby Town where he made his official EFL debut in 2019 – eventually making another 44 appearances for the club and scoring four times.

Ahead of the 2022/23 season, Wright signed for EFL 2 club Harrogate Town before going on loan to FC Halifax Town, where he signed a permanent move at the end of the campaign and remained until his eventual move to Australia.

In signing with Hume City FC, Wright was looking forward to the new challenge and the opportunity to play football in Australia under coach Nick Hegarty.

“I think after a decade in England, it felt right for a change. Doing 10 years at the same thing becomes a bit samey. So I thought I’d change it up and test the waters a little bit. And I don’t think I could have any further away,”

“I knew the gaffer (Hegarty) as he’s from whereabouts I’m from, and when I had a chat with him where he explained the situation, the club and how it all operates – it definitely piqued my interest, and I thought I would push the boat out and try it.

“My first impressions of the club is that the set-up is fantastic. The pitch is in immaculate condition, the sessions are fantastic and the lads are great. They’ve been very welcoming and have made it very easy to settle in.

“Personally the goals for me are to get up to match speed and fitness and get going, make a few appearances and try and affect the games as best as possible and help out.

“We all want to play well, but the only objective of football is to win. So whether I’m on the bench, starting or not in the squad, the only objective is to win the game.”

A proven goalscorer in the fourth and fifth tiers of England’s Football Association pyramid, Wright brings plenty of experience to Hume City’s attack as the club looks to secure its first-ever National Premier League – Victoria title.

“Max is a fantastic addition to our squad as we enter the last nine games,” Hegarty said on Wright’s acquisition.

“His quality is matched by his relentless work ethic and energy. Bringing another fantastic person into our group only enhances our squad and we are excited to see what the final few months of the season brings.”

Hume City FC continues its charge for the 2026 title against Dandenong Thunder this weekend at George Andrews Reserve in Dandenong, with Wright eligible to play.
