Hume City re-signs homegrown talent Okane for 2026

Hume City FC rising star Joshua Okane will remain at the club for the foreseeable future after penning a contract extension for the 2026 season and beyond.

A Hume City product from when he was a junior, Okane has enjoyed a stellar rise through the ranks over the years since arriving at Broadmeadows at 12 years old, with the new deal to see the player hit a major 10-year milestone affiliation with the club.

Joining as a in the inaugural season of junior NPL footballer, the young star played his whole junior career with Hume City FC before progressing through to the under 19s and under 23s where he flourished.

His impressive rise through the club earned the talented midfielder multiple call ups to train with the senior squad under Nick Hegarty in the Englishman’s first stint with the club.

Okane then broke through to the squad on multiple occasions during the 2023 season but didn’t play a game, eventually debuting before making his first senior appearance on Matchday 1 of the 2024 season against Dandenong Thunder.

Once he debuted for the senior team though, Okane never looked back as he featured in every game of the 2024 National Premier League Victoria season, mostly as a starter and scoring his first-ever goal towards the back half of the season, as well as making a few appearances in the Australia Cup.

In 2025, Okane went to another level and produced some of the best football in his career, netting on three occasions, providing three goal assists and cementing himself within the first 11, having started all but two of the 26 NPL games.

This season-ending visit to St Albans also saw Okane notch up his 50th National Premier League Victoria appearance with the club.

“Re-signing with Hume City was an easy decision as this club feels like home,” Okane said.

“I’ve really enjoyed the environment and atmosphere around the team every day. It’s a great place to come in and do what I love.

“I’ve grown a lot as a player here and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game, helping the team achieve something special this season. I’m proud to keep wearing these colours.”

Hume City manager Nick Hegarty was pleased to retain Okane, who he praised for his development.

“Josh is an amazing example of what players can achieve by sticking with the club and progressing through the ranks,” Hegarty said.

“He has proven himself time and time again as a robust midfielder who has no shortage of talent and is clearly a Hume City boy through and through.

“It’s been fantastic seeing him become the player he is today from when he first joined training with the senior squad all those years ago.

“Whilst he is a vital part of our football club, myself and my staff must push Josh to the limits of his potential as he has all the skill sets needed to step up a level”
