Hume City FC signs experienced playmaker Steve Whyte

Hume City FC is delighted to welcome Queensland gun Steve Whyte as its latest signing for the 2026 season.

The experienced 29-year-old joins the club after a three-year stint with rival National Victoria Premier League club Melbourne Knights, and will boost Hume City’s midfield stocks.

Boasting a wealth of experience on-field, Whyte began his career in New South Wales with heralded A-Leagues side Central Coast Mariners, starting out with the Gosford-based outfit’s Academy.

Making 70 appearances with the Academy over three years and serving as captain, Whyte was then invited to the senior squad for the 2017 season before getting the opportunity to move to the United States, where he played with the Seattle Sounders FC 2 in the United Soccer League for a short period.

Following a brief stint in the US, Whyte then returned to Australia to join Olympic Football Club in Brisbane, enjoying a lengthy run of more than 120 appearances over a five-year period, helping the club to five consecutive grand finals and earning himself the reputation as one of the NPL Queensland’s best players.

In his time at Olympic, he featured in the NPL Queensland Team of the Season in four consecutive years between 2018 and 2022, while also claiming the team’s Player of the Season twice.

His good consistent form as a playmaking forward saw him attract the interest of the Melbourne Knights ahead of the 2023 season, where he went on to play for the next three seasons.

In coming to Hume City FC, Whyte was pleased to be able to remain at the top level of football.

“Really happy to sign with Hume City FC and remain in the National Premier League,” Whyte said.

“I want to sort of stamp my authority this year because I have been carrying an injury over the past two years, so I’m just happy to be here and to have this opportunity.

“As soon as I sat down with Nick, joining was an easy decision to make because his vision for Hume City is something I want to be a part of.

“Hume City is a big club and I want to be part of a big club. I also want to compete for trophies and win something because I’m not getting any younger, so I am really looking forward to this upcoming season.”

Hume City FC coach Nick Hegarty was pleased to have a player of Whyte’s stature join the club.

“Steve has undoubted quality and I am excited to see how our group benefits from his ability. ” Hegarty said.

“His skill set complements the style of football we want to deliver and he has a drive and determination which will rub off on the rest of the squad.

“His exceptional leadership qualities, as displayed throughout different points of his career, will be fantastic for our younger boys.”
