Hume City FC signs aggressive defender Joshua Wilkins

Hume City is thrilled to add aggressive defender Joshua Wilkins to its 2026 player roster.

Wilkins arrives at Hume City FC having captained Northcote City FC in the VPL 1 last season, but brings plenty of NPL experience having been part of successful teams at Heidelberg and Port Melbourne.

Originally from Perth, Wilkins was part of the Heidelberg teams to win back-to-back the NPL Premierships in 2017 and 2018, with the latter season also delivering a NPL Championship.

Wilkins is potent from defence due to his ability to work forward and back, whether be scoring or setting goals up front, then working back to restrict scoring for the opposition.

The signing of Wilkins adds to Hume City FC’s busy Transfer Period during which it has bolstered its strong playing list.

“I moved over from Perth around 10 years ago and signed at Heidelberg,” Wilkins said.

“We won championships at Heidelberg during the seven year period I was there before moving to Port Melbourne for two years where I also enjoyed success. Most recently I was captain at Northcote City and I’ve come back to play NPL with Hume City.

“I played against Hegs (Nick Hegarty, Hume City FC coach) and I know who he is as a person and I’ve heard some fantastic things about him as a coach, so I’m really excited to play for him. Obviously, Hume City is a fantastic club and rate them very highly, so I’m excited to represent the team.

“I really want to win trophies and I’m really excited to be back playing NPL. I’ve missed the competitiveness of playing at this level a lot.

“I think Hume City FC has got a good, strong competitive squad and I think this year is going to be close across the board in the NPL, so I think we’ll do very well with the player list we have.

“I like getting forward, scoring goals and getting assists, but I also like to work backwards to make sure we don’t concede. I’m aggressive, powerful and put my body around, and make sure people are proud of me when. I step onto the pitch.”

Hume City FC Senior Coach Nick Hegarty is delighted to welcome Wilkins to Naisol Stadium.

“Josh has been someone I have admired for a long time and I’m extremely happy to have him with us,” said Hegarty.

“His experience, positivity and professionalism will be valuable for our group.

“Adding another leader to our group is important and we are excited to see Josh in a Hume City shirt.”

Hume City FC will begin its 2026 NPL Victoria season at Nasiol Stadium against the Altona Magic on Friday, 13 February.
